Rostrum released his debut EP, On and on and Beyond, and his debut album, Blue Slide Park, in 2011. mixtape became his breakthrough when it was released in August of 2010, earning plenty of attention from hip-hop blogs and landing Miller a recording contract with Rostrum Records. Born Malcolm McCormick, Miller first used the alias 'Easy Mac,' a name referenced on his debut mixtape, 2007's But My Mackin' Ain't Easy.

Coming on the scene with a throwback style that betrayed his years, Pittsburgh-based rapper Mac Miller had just turned 18 when he spent 2010 making his name through mixtapes and video-sharing websites. Is all this music newfound appreciation for an artist gone-too-soon? Or exploitation of a prolific musician? Jury's out, but we certainly know Mac Miller's close friend and collaborator Anderson. That includes his estate releasing Circles, the posthumous album that landed two tracks back-to-back in triple j's Hottest 100 of 2020 ('Good News' and 'Blue World' at #23 and #24). His final two albums were reissued on vinyl and there was the 10th anniversary of his mixtape K.I.D.S., as well as a whole stack of posthumous features and music.

This isn't the first reappraisal of Mac's output since the artist died from a drug overdose in September 2018. It’s sort of a look at the emotional and difficult and perilous but noble path of an artist.”

"In the abstract, it’s meant to be a video about childhood-growing up as an artist and the highs and lows of that experience. With permission from Miller's family, he explored "scenes from the town where he grew up, objects, toys from his room-little pieces of his life that I extrapolated outwards and used to inspire the story.”

Mason explains the video was inspired by Ralph, and brings to life "bits and pieces" from Mac's childhood.
